| Bio: | Character: Alphonse Elric Series/Fandom: FullMetal Alchemist Original or Alternate: Alternate Age: 19 Gender: Male Species: Human Sexuality: Homosexual Appearance: Alphonse, much to his elder brother's annoyance no doubt, is just taller than him (about 5' 8"), and because of the way Al sits up straight and doesn't constantly hunch over research books like his brother does, their difference in posture adds to the height difference, making it even more noticable. Al doesn't do it to irritate Edward, of course; it is just a physical illustration of the kind of person Alphonse is- optimistic, forward-thinking, always holding his head up high, proud but not loud about it, showing it in the way he carries himself rather than through his words. Al has a copper hair, a slight shade darker than his brother's golden hair. His eyes as well are a bronze color. Daily attire is simple and incospicious- a white button up shirt, dark slacks, a jacket for those colder days. Personality: Alphonse is a calm person, the exact opposite to his rather fiery, excitable brother. He is thoughtful, considerate, optimistic, friendly, intelligent- these and other qualities are perhaps the reasons why Alphonse, despite his age, was made the leader of the resistance. He has a clear focus, is idealistic, fair and judicious. For someone as young as him, his cool, diplomatic nature is surprising, though perhaps dealing with Edward his whole life has taught him how not to let his anger get the better of him. Because of his caring nature, Al can be somewhat of a worrywart. He worries for his brother, for the people in the resistance, for the entire country, even those they are fighting against. Al's caring nature can sometimes have the tendancy to get him into trouble too, as he is a very trusting person who wishes to see the best in everyone. For those who do not know him, Al may seem innocent and naive. But while he does give off that impression because of his trusting nature, Al has Edward to remind him that not everyone in the world is deserving of his trust. He may not like to believe that, but Al is not so naive to think that just because he gives someone his trust, they won't stab him in the back later. But Al would rather initially trust people than be suspicious of them. Abilities/Strengths: Al has a basic understanding of alchemy (he couldn't grow up with Edward and not be exposed to the science), however he does not rely on that skill more often than absolutely necessary. Alphonse's primary skill is that he is an excellent public speaker, comfortable interacting with many people. He's very persuasive and skilled at conveying his thoughts and opinions in a clear way. It's how he got noticed when he joined the resistance cause, that and his ideas themselves. Alphonse is a very intelligent, well-read person and he puts his intelligence to good use. Weapons: None, other than his words. His words have a power of their own, though, and so, they are enough. Weaknesses: While it is a trait to be admired, as mentioned earlier, Al's willingness to trust in others is also a weakness when he gives his trust to the wrong people. He believes in humanity a little too much, and is easily hurt by the betrayal of his trust. However, over the years he's come to understand that it is a part of human nature, and must be embraced along with the good. He has learned that in order to conquer that darkness, he must not ignore it, but acknowledge it, understand it, find its weakness. Through his mistakes and his hurt, Al turns his weakness into a strength. His main weakness, however, is his brother, Edward. His big brother is the only family he has left, and Al worries about him constantly. Ed is one of the reasons he joined the resistance in the beginning, so that he could be there to help him in any way possible. He is also a factor in Al's decision to accept his role as leader of the cause, because as such he could look out for his brother. Knowing of Ed's paranoia, Al desperately wants to help him with that, as well as keeping a constant eye on his health. He worries that if he were not there to take care of Edward, he would spend his life reading book after book, stopping for nothing until he has wasted away. Edward is Al's most treasured person. He looks up to him, respects him, cherishes and loves him. He is the most important person in Al's world...but as the leader of such a large cause as the one they are involved in, this affection can sometimes cloud Al's judgment, though he tries not to let it. If he could, he would pull Edward out of his current assignment and place him closer to himself, to protect him. But he knows that Ed holds a crucial part in the resistance information system and that both the members of the cause and Ed himself would look down on such an action, were Al to make it. It frustrates Al that he cannot keep Edward as safe as he would like. History: In this Amestris, alchemy and technology were developed at about the same rate, so that such myths as the Philisopher's Stone and homunculi are just that- myths, fantasies, not real. Also, this world is about 20 years ahead of the canon universe, making it sometime around the 1930's-1940's. Alphonse was born to Hohenheim and Trisha Elric in Rizenbul a year after his older brother Edward. Their father was a State Alchemist while their mother ran a small farm. Their were a relatively happy family- Trisha was a kind, loving parent who doted on her two boys. Hohenheim, unfortunately due to the nature of his job, was not home a lot, but the three of them that he left behind got along fairly well without him, though the boys could see that their father's absense had a negative effect on their mother's otherwise cheerful nature. The situation saddned Al, but it angered ed and made him resentful toward their often-absent parent. Unfortunately, when Hohenheim tried to leave the military and join his family, he and all other State Alchemists were shipped off to war. Four years later, the Elric family received the tragic news that Hohenheim would never be returning home. Soon after, Trisha left their lives forever as well, following her husband into death. Al was thirteen at the time. He watched as his brother on the surface cursed their father for being the cause of their mother's death. They both reached the same conclusion though, that the one to blame was the military. Soon after the war ended, horrible news about the military and its inner-workings was revealed, each bit more horrible than the last. While Al couldn't find it in himself to blame the military for his parents' deaths, the more he and Ed learned about the military, the more Al came to believe that a change had to be made, for the better of the country. When Edward turned 16, Al watched as he joined a small resistance-movement that was just starting to form. Al was forced to watch as the movement grew, as Edward took on bigger and more dangerous tasks, and yet was forbiddon by his brother to join as well. Al knew it was for his own protection, but he wanted to change the world with him! And when Al turned 17, he finally joined the now large resistance. By this time Edward had been placed as a double-agent into the military itself, and Al wondered how he could ever have as important a role as his elder brother. It wasn't that he was jealous of Ed's role; he just wanted to be as much a help as his role model. But Al got his opprtunities to prove himself intelligent, useful, and and those who heard him speak agreed that Al had the right mindset to lead the resistance movement. It was overwhelming, at first, to imagine that people in the movement were nominating him to become their leader, and even moreso to know Edward supported him in that role as well. Flattering, but terrifying. But seeing the amount of support he had, Al couldn't turn such a respected position down. Ever since, he has wisely and fairly led the resistance, gathering a small group of trusted advisors to help him plan out the cause's movements. Al is aware of the danger of his position, as well as the respect he gains from within the group, but is modest and does not let it go to his head. He is very cautious as well, since he does not want to put his brother, the double agent, in any danger because of his connection to Al. Al has been part of the movement for two years now, when he is pulled into Econtra minutes after Edward disappears there.
